Our smash hit game Agar.io is the 3rd biggest trending search term worldwide on Google in 2015. It is also ranked 1st in the games category. A free, simple game that you can play in your browser or on your mobile generated more searches than any other game all year, a testament to the viral success of the game.
Agar.io is game where you control a small cell and roam around the map eating food pellets to make yourself grow larger – at which point you can start eating other players, too. You can split to fire off half of your mass at speed and take down others. There are also spiky green viruses to avoid – these will split you up and leave you vulnerable. The goal is to get to the top of the leaderboard, or just troll other players – up to you.
Part of the game’s popularity comes down to the different skins you can play as – just enter “Obama” as your nickname and you’ll be gliding about as the President – but you’ll probably find Putin or Trump trying to take you down.
The game has been extremely popular across the net, particularly on YouTube with thousands of fans creating gameplay videos, including top names like PewDiePie and Markiplier. Several now-famous YouTubers have established themselves solely on playing Agar.io, and our own YouTube channel, created as a place for us to curate the best Agar.io videos, has almost reached 1 million subscribers.
Agar.io has been one of Miniclip’s success stories for 2015 – and we’re delighted to see its popularity reflected in it placing in the top 3 trending search terms. Thank you to all the players and creators that made it the #1 game of the year.
